English

This week your daily English challenges are based on the short animation

‘The Naughty Bus’

which has been inspired by the book of the same name  written by Jan and Jerry Oke.

A young child receives a toy bus as a present.

They have lots of fun exploring the world with their new toy which turns out to be quite a naughty bus.

Naughty Bus

English Challenge 1 - Monday 29th June 2020

I have got a list of questions for you to help you discuss and respond to what you have watched and understood about the film clip. You could just talk about them with your adult or have a go at writing some of your answers down in your book to practise your handwriting skills too.

  • What kind of bus is the Naughty Bus? London, Mansfield or Nottingham bus.
  • How do you think the toys feel when the bus drives straight past them?
  • What important job does it need to do?
  • How do you think the bus feels when he falls into the water?
  • Who rescues the bus after he falls down outside?
  • What adjective is used to describe the monkey’s arms?
  • Give two examples of naughty things that the bus does.
  • Who do you think is naughty, the boy or bus?

English Challenge 2 - Tuesday 30th June 2020

Today we are going to be creating a storyboard for the film ‘The Naughty Bus’.

Use the storyboard given to you below to help retell the story in the correct order. If you do not have a printer, fold a piece of paper into 8 sections and draw the pictures to help you.

Try to write one or two sentences for each picture using time sequencing words e.g. then, next, after, finally.

English Challenge 3 - Wednesday 1st July 2020

Today we are going to change the story to make your own version. We are going to innovate The Naughty Bus story by changing the main character.

What character could be in your story?

Here are a few ideas – The Naughty Car, The Naughty Fire Engine, The Naughty Motorbike or The Naughty Monster Truck.

Now you have chosen the main character for your story, I would like you to draw a storyboard for your innovated story. Use the storyboard provided or create your own by folding a piece of paper into 8 sections.

If you are feeling more creative today, you could use a toy car and take photographs of it acting out the story instead of drawing the pictures.

English Challenge 4 - Thursday 2nd July 2020

Today we are going to write our innovated Naughty Bus story.

Using your storyboard, orally retell your innovated story. Use actions to help you remember the story and the key vocabulary.

Next, I would like you to write the beginning and middle part of the story (the first 4 boxes on your story map) in your exercise book. Use your storyboard and oral retelling of the story to help you write the story.  Do not rush – take your time.

English Challenge 5 - Friday 3rd July 2020

Using your storyboard, orally retell your innovated story. Use actions to help you remember the story and the key vocabulary.
